Early life & Background

  • Growing up in the suburbs of Mumbai, young cricketer Sarfaraz was brought up in a cricket-oriented family. He has his roots in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, adding a rich cricket heritage to his upbringing. Azad Maidan, as he is known since his childhood, is the place where his father and coach, Naushad Khan trained and mentored promising cricketers like Iqbal Abdullah and Kamran Khan.
  • Noticing Sarfraz’s natural talent for timing the ball just right, his father started coaching him when he was quite young. Yet, Mumbai’s rainy season made it tricky for their usual practice sessions at the Azad Maidan grounds. To tackle this challenge, they set up a synthetic pitch beside his house. This not only saved time and energy but also provided him with valuable experience facing bouncier wickets, a crucial skill for his future in cricket.
  • Sarfaraz’s dedication towards his cricket journey was so strong that he had to leave school for four years. Even though cricket was a big part of his life, his education mattered a lot. To ensure that he did not fall behind in his mathematics and English studies, his family appointed a special teacher for him. This special blend of hard work, creative training and academic support played a big role in shaping Sarfaraz’s incredible journey from the suburbs of Mumbai to the international cricket stage.
